The new 79th card in the second edition: Garden Chimes and Water Song
Hi! My name is James R. Eads and I've been creating tarot decks and divination tools for over ten years. I created Prisma Visions Tarot in 2014 and the Cosma Visions Oracle in 2020. I designed Cosma Visions as a mirror reflection of Prisma Visions with 78 cards that offer an alternate perspective on the tarot major and minor arcana with the idea of past lives as the blueprint.
I was playing around with lenticular samples in 2022 when the idea to merge the two decks came to mind, giving birth to Mirra Visions.
The shifting quality of Mirra Visions breathes new life into these two decks that have become so integral to my creative journey. When I saw the first samples of this deck I was speechless.
I have spent years trying to find a way to bring actual physical movement to the work I have been making. I collaborated with Chris McDaniels for years on moving images that pulse with life.
When we first started sharing them they went viral. Since then I've wanted to find a way to get these moving images into your hands. Lenticular printing was always in the back of my mind, but I found it fell flat when using 8 frames. There is something so magical about these Mirra Visions cards because they only use 2 frames. It allows each image to shine through and create a third ethereal image on each card. It's this combination image of the two that really struck me as a reason to make this deck.
I had three rounds of samples produced for this project. In the first round, the cards were way too thick and the lenticular lenses on the cards were too wide. It made the cards look pixelated and a lot of the detail was lost. I worked with the printer on another sample, but the 2nd sample wasn't it either. The lenses were too close together and the card wouldn't hold either image and just made a blur. I was going to scrap the project but I gave it one more push and this third sample was perfect.
- Spec -
The front of the Mirra Visions cards are printed with 161 Lenses Per Inch. I designed a new back for Mirra Visions (static image because a lenticular back made the cards too thick), rewrote the guidebook to include upright and reversed meanings for the newly merged cards, and created a shiny new box design suitable for this shifting deck.
The cards are a similar thickness to the Prisma Visions and Cosma Visions decks, believe it or not! They are easy to shuffle.
The cards are the same size as Prisma/Cosma Visions: 2.75" x 4.75" or 70mm x 120mm
The box is designed to split the deck into two stacks, which allows for a larger size booklet.
- Lenticular printing -
Lenticular printing creates an image from at least two images behind a lenticular lens. Once the images are collected, they are arranged in individual frame files, and then digitally combined into a single file in a process called interlacing. Each image is arranged slicing into strips. These are printed on paper, which is then bonded to the plastic.
The lenses are accurately aligned with the interlaces of the image, so that light reflected off each strip is refracted in a slightly different direction, but the light from all pixels originating from the same original image is sent in the same direction. The end result is that a single eye looking at the print sees a single whole image, but two eyes will see different images, which leads to stereoscopic 3D perception. The larger movement of the viewer or the print causes the image to flip from one image to another (the "flip effect").
- The Box -
The Mirra Visions box is unique in itself as is a departure from the boxes of Prisma and Cosma Visions. I wanted this deck to stand on its own, and the shifting quality of the cards called for a reimagining of the box that houses them. The Mirra Visions box uses holographic rainbow foil and UV varnishing to create an iridescent cosmic explosion.
